Karen Phillips
Phillips draws on her education
in landscape architecture, real estate development and urban design in her
position as founder and CEO of the Abyssinian Development Corporation, an
independent nonprofit organization established by the Abyssinian Baptist
Church in Harlem. Phillips has helped the organization create or manage
more than 500 housing units. She initiated the Central Harlem Local
Development Corporation, which provides technical support for local
businesses and management of the redevelopment of the Renaissance Ballroom
Theater Complex, developed a Head Start program and organized 15 block
associations in central Harlem. In 1996, Crain's New York Business named
Phillips one of New York's 75 Most Influential Women.
