2007 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio
Shaker Heights High School A Cappella Men and Women’s Ensemble
Superior performance is a hallmark of the performing arts in the Shaker Heights City Schools. Twice named a Grammy Signature School by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Foundation in recognition of its outstanding music program, Shaker Heights High School provides rich opportunities for aesthetic development through music. More than 600 students (nearly 40% of the high school population) are enrolled in a performing ensemble. In addition to an active school and community performance, concert and competition schedule, the Shaker musical ensembles have made numerous European concert tours including travels to Germany, Austria, England, France, Belgium, Holland, the Czech Republic and Italy. This spring choir and orchestra members will perform in Spain and members of the band in China. The A Cappella Men's and A Cappella Women's Ensembles are two of the seven performing choirs at the high school. These select groups of singers specialize in singing traditional and popular a cappella music. They are under the direction of Dr. Robert Schneider, chair of the Shaker Heights High School Music Department and director of choirs at the high school.
