Dr. Jacquelyn S. Quay has made significant contributions to arts education through her leadership and willingness to serve her community, the state and the nation. As part of the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Education she taught pre-service teachers instructional planning and instructional management courses. Moving from higher education to community arts education in 1994, she became part of the not-for-profit world where she remained for 11 years. Quay is now responsible for the day-to-day operations of The Options Academy - The Arts, a Butler Technology and Career Development School housed in the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton. She pioneered a distance learning program through her work at the Fitton Center and has assisted in assuring that the arts are integrated as a crucial component of core curricula for all students. Quay took this position after successfully directing the nationally recognized arts in education program, SPECTRA+, an acronym for Schools Parents Educators Children Teachers Rediscover the Arts. SPECTRA+ was awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to study the effects of SPECTRA+ on students, teachers and parents. Quay has been a presenter at local and national conferences and has edited and written articles about the arts which have appeared in several state and national publications. Her expertise in arts education, curriculum and assessment coupled with her credible, no-nonsense yet passionate and loving approach has placed her among the leaders in arts education. As a lifelong learner, Quay has reinvented herself many times as a student, administrator, community leader and national player. All of these stages of life have a common cross-point - arts education. Through her love of the arts, education and learning she has touched the lives of many, ultimately earning her the honor of the 2007 Governor's Award for Arts in Education.
