The Dayton Power & Light Company has provided energy and illumination to the greater Dayton area for nearly 100 years - not only practically, in its role as the area's chief electricity supplier, but also as a provider for the cultural landscape. From its beginnings in Dayton two years before Dayton's Great Flood of 1913, Dayton Power & Light has grown to serve more than half a million customers in west central Ohio, and has had a powerful impact through its generous support of the arts. From making substantive financial contributions to almost every major arts project in the community, to encouraging company leadership to serve on arts boards, to educating its employees in the life-transforming benefits of the arts, Dayton Power & Light Company has marshaled all of its resources to take a holistic and strategic interest in the welfare of the arts community in greater Dayton. Annually the company commits hundreds of thousands of dollars to the arts as part of its well-informed philanthropic commitment of over $1 million. Areas of support range from bricks-and-mortar capital gifts to season sponsorships, from the purchase of tickets and tables at fund raising events to the recruitment of volunteers for fairs and festivals. It's appropriate that the main stage of Dayton's Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center bears the name of Dayton Power & Light because the company not only contributed to the building of this state-of-the-art facility, but has itself so often served as a "stage" for the arts in Dayton. For bringing light to the cultural community in the Dayton area, Dayton Power & Light Company is honored with the award for Business Support of the Arts.
