Bebe Miller, Columbus

Bebe Miller is an internationally renowned choreographer and dancer who has chosen to make Ohio her home since 2000. She attended graduate school at the Department of Dance at The Ohio State University and even after moving to New York continually returned to Ohio to work with companies and organizations here, including the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the Wexner Center for the Arts and The OSU Department of Dance. Her choreography has received numerous awards and grants including National Endowment for the Arts, Ohio Arts Council, Battelle Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation and others. Recently Miller and her collaborators received the prestigious BESSIE award from the New York dance community for her production of Landing/Place. During the past five years Miller has created the majority of her work in Ohio, offering open rehearsals to the public with lively discussions about her work and insights into the creative process. She is a sought after teacher and has taught at institutions around Ohio as well as nationally and internationally, mentoring future generations of young artists. Miller demonstrates a work ethic with her collaborators that is respectful, insightful, demanding and good humored. In choreographing dance about sense of place, about relationships and the way we move or are moved she has maintained her childlike sense of play and humbleness. The dances she creates speak to a vision of a world where people listen to each other and difference is embraced. Miller is passionate for dance education and the overall health of the dance community and enthusiastically proclaims her love for Ohio - a place that has nurtured and inspired her. The Governor's Award for Individual Artist is a fitting tribute to this accomplished and productive Ohio artist.
