Artists - Getting Started

Read our Artist in Residence guidelines for an overview of the program before considering making an application to the program.

Big Picture Tips
Assess Yourself

Big Picture Tips

  • Start early. The grant deadline is July 1.
  • Contact the Arts Learning office with questions.
  • Visit or call artists in your discipline who are in the Artist Directory to discuss their residency experiences. The Arts Learning staff can provide a list of artists who have recently conducted residencies.
  • Contact Arts Learning Program Coordinator Chiquita Mullins Lee, chiquita.mullins-lee@oac.state.oh.us, with any questions you have about the application process.
  • Be thoughtful and thorough in submitting your application.

Assess Yourself

  • Residency artists work in a variety of educational and community settings. Consider the environments that you like to work in and the people you like to engage in the creative process.
  • Examine your artistic process and professional goals to determine your readiness to work as an artist in residence.
  • Consider your professional artistic and educational work experience.
  • Consider your ability to communicate about your art discipline and creative process with individuals of varying ages and experience.
  • Evaluate your ability to plan, organize and follow through. Residencies demand realistic planning from organized and dependable artists.
  • Determine minimum space and equipment needed to work in your art discipline.
  • Explore possible ideas for residency activities. Ideas should be realistic for the residency time-frame and appropriate for selected participants.
  • Begin to prepare publicity materials and educational handouts that will help sponsors understand your art discipline and creative work.
