2009 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio
West Muskingum Jazz Band
West Muskingum High School is located in Zanesville, Ohio, which is best known
for its unique Y-shaped bridge spanning the convergence of the Muskingum
and Licking Rivers. Zanesville has a rich history as an important town along the
National Road that hosted the state capital from 1810-1812 and as a center for
ceramics production. The e West Muskingum Jazz Band is dedicated to learning
the traditional styles of big band jazz using authentic instrumentation. Their
repertoire includes music from the legendary Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke
Ellington and Stan Kenton bands to more recent compositions from outstanding
composers and arrangers such as Sammy Nestico and Dave Wolpe. Just like the
bands that inspire them, they strive to master a variety of styles from blues
to latin to swing. The West Muskingum Jazz Band has performed in a variety
of venues around the region for various public and private functions as well
as for many school events each year. The band is honored to perform representing all of the arts around the great state of Ohio.
