2009 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio

Business Support of the Arts

Huntington Bank, Statewide Huntington Bank, Statewide

Nominated By: Columbus Museum of Art

Huntington Bank has provided an unwavering commitment to improving the quality of Ohio's cultural community through its philanthropic support of dozens of arts organizations and initiatives throughout the state. In Columbus, Huntington has been a long time supporter of the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA), Phoenix Theatre's Residency Program that brings art into the schools as well as BalletMet, Opera Columbus, King Arts Complex and the Jazz Arts Group. Huntington holds an annual campaign for the Fine Arts Fund in Cincinnati and is one of the largest contributors to the Fund. In addition to being involved in large cities, Huntington also has supported the Springfield Arts Council's Summer Arts Festival. Other recipients of Huntington's generosity include Playhouse Square Foundation in Cleveland and the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra. Huntington's partnership with the Columbus Museum of Art plays an integral role in the museum's ability to provide high-quality arts experiences to museum visitors. In terms of financial health and leadership, the connection has been pivotal to CMA. Huntington has contributed more than $3 million to help sustain a full schedule of exhibitions and programs. The diversity of these exhibitions allows the museum to achieve its goal of providing a wide variety of both critically acclaimed and popular exhibitions. Huntington Chairman Tom Hoaglin and his wife, Ann, are heading up the CMA's 'Art Matters' Campaign, with a goal of raising $80 million to secure the museum's future. While certainly significant, Huntington's support is measured by much more than its financial gifts - Huntington supports a culture of philanthropy through volunteers. Nearly two dozen Huntington associates serve on central Ohio nonprofit boards. All across Ohio, Huntington Bank provides broad-based arts support and it was the first funder to step up for the Columbus Symphony after the new contract was signed in 2008. Indeed, it is everyone in the community - artists, educators, students, volunteers, and the general public - who benefit through increased access to great artistic experiences made possible by the gifts of a visionary business leader like Huntington Bank.
