2009 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio
Arts Patron
Roe Green, Aurora
Nominated By: Dr. John R. Crawford
As a philanthropist, arts patron, arts advocate and champion for arts education,
Roe Green is a major force in promoting the creation and advancement of the
performing arts. After receiving her master's degree in theatre from Kent State
University (KSU), Green worked at Cain Park and the Cleveland Opera as well
as at Kent State University as a director, stage manager and business manager.
Due to a keen understanding and awareness of the power of the arts, Green
has become a major philanthropist and has advocated for and supported the
arts in Northeast Ohio for more than a decade. She is the honorary producer of
'FusionFest,' a festival at the Cleveland Play House that showcases new dramatic
works. She has served on the board for Cleveland Play House, Porthouse Theatre,
School of Theatre and Dance at KSU and the Foundation Board for KSU. Green is
also a board member for The Roe Green Foundation and founded the Green Arts
Fund, which supports the Jewish Community Center arts and culture program.
The Roe Green Foundation established a visiting director series at KSU which
allows nationally and internationally renowned directors to work in residence
with students for six to seven weeks each year. In January 2006, the Foundation
pledged $6.5 million, the largest capital gift in KSU history, in order to create
new and renovated facilities for the School of Theatre and Dance. She was
instrumental in funding the Dance Cleveland residency of the Paul Taylor Dance
Company and has supported organizations including the Cleveland Play House,
Case Western Reserve University, Dance Cleveland, and the Maltz Museum of
Jewish Heritage. On the national level, Green has served as President of the
Conference About Volunteers of Regional Theatres (CAVORT) and serves on the
board for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter, Florida. She is a dedicated arts
advocate and a supportive role model helping young people pursue their dreams
as aspiring artists.
