The Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory is a publicly searchable listing of artists that live and work in or near Ohio’s Appalachian region. The Directory is managed by the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), and is free and open to the public for browsing and searching. The purpose of the Directory is to increase access to and communication among Ohio’s many Appalachian artists and arts organizations, and to help strengthen the role the arts play in the communities of Appalachian Ohio. The online Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory represents the next step for the Ohio Arts Council’s work with the communities of Ohio’s Appalachian region. In 1982 the OAC launched the Appalachian Outreach Project, which later grew into the now familiar Appalachian Arts Program. Resources published in support of these programs included the Directory of Appalachian Artists in Ohio in 1986, and Ohio’s Appalachian Arts and Crafts Resources in 1998. In 2003 we launched the Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory, and because it exists online it can be kept constantly up-to-date and continue to grow and evolve as needed to provide the most relevant service to its users. The Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory is designed to be a powerful tool for the region and makes searching for artists and craftspeople easier and faster than it has ever been before. It is our sincere hope that arts and non-arts organizations of every kind throughout the region will make use of it – festivals, guilds, theatres, arts centers, galleries, bands, co-ops, publications, researchers, schools, interested citizens and more.
