Frequently Asked Questions

1.   Who is eligible to be listed in the Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory?
Any artist living or working in or near the Appalachian region of Ohio can be listed. There is no screening or jurying process.

2.   How can I become listed in the Directory for the first time?
Click on <Search Directory> and then <Search Appalachian Arts Individual Artists> to see if your name is already listed. If it is not, click <Request a logon to create an Individual Record> and follow the directions. You will need to enter your first name, last name and e-mail address, and you will be prompted to create a unique username and password for yourself (username and password will not be viewable by the public). After your application has been approved by the Directory Administrator you will receive an e-mail notifying you that access has been granted allowing you to log in and create your artist profile.

3.   Can I edit my artist profile myself? I am already listed in the Directory.
Yes! First find your entry using the Search page, and then click <Use existing logon to create/edit your Individual Record> at the top of the page. You will need to enter your first name, last name, and e-mail address, and you will be prompted to create a username and password for yourself (username and password will not be viewable by the public). After your application has been approved by the Directory Administrator you will receive an e-mail notifying you that access has been granted allowing you to log in and edit your profile.

4.   How can I tell if I have already created an artist login for myself? I am already listed in the Directory.
If while viewing your artist profile you see a link that says <Create logon for this page>, this indicates that no one currently has artist login rights for that profile. If you have already received access to edit your profile, another button marked <Logon to edit page> will appear instead.

5.   I received my artist login but have forgotten or lost my username and/or password.
When you enter your username and password to login to the Directory, you have the option of having your artist login information mailed to your e-mail address. Just fill in the e-mail address you submitted when you first got your artist login information, and the e-mail is sent immediately to that address. The Directory will tell you if it does not currently have an entry with the e-mail address you specify.

6.   Can I change my user login information (my user first/last name, username, password, and/or e-mail address)?
Yes. After you are logged in to the Directory and viewing your individual record, click <Edit Profile> to view your profile. This will allow you to change your first or last name, username, password or e-mail address. These are fields that are not viewable by the public. After you have made changes, click <Save> to be returned to your record.

7.   I’m not sure what some of the fields in the Directory mean. How can I find out?
Visit our Help page in the gold menu bar above, which will provide you with brief definitions of the fields that the Directory uses.

8.   I requested an artist login but did not receive an e-mail notification that my request was received.
An e-mail will be automatically sent to the e-mail address you entered as soon as a request for an artist login is received. It is possible that a server problem is delaying your notification e-mail, a problem is occurring with your e-mail provider, or you may have entered the wrong e-mail address. If it’s been more than 24 hours since you entered your information please e-mail the Directory Administrator for assistance.

9.   I received confirmation that my artist login request was received, but I never heard whether or not it was approved by the Directory Administrator.
The Ohio Arts Council staff usually approves requests for new artist logins within 2-4 business days, but during some busy periods it may take longer. If more than a week has passed and you haven’t received your approval e-mail, you should e-mail the Directory Administrator for assistance.

10. I am sure my username and password are correct, but I am not being allowed to login and access the Directory.
Your artist login may have been changed to “inactive” by the Directory Administrator for some reason, or a server error of some kind may be occurring. If you have already requested your username and password and are sure they are correct but still cannot login to the Directory, you should e-mail the Directory Administrator for assistance.

11. How can I be removed from the Directory?
Please e-mail the Directory Administrator for assistance. We can completely delete your record from the Directory, or simply change your status to “inactive” and remove you from the portion of the Directory that is viewable to the public (either temporarily or permanently) but retain your record for our mailings, contact information, or future re-activation.

12. How does the Ohio Arts Council use my personal information shown in the Directory?
Your personal information is used to list you in the online Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory and for occasional Ohio Arts Council mailings; it is not sold to outside mailing lists or given to marketers, etc. The Directory is viewable to the general public, however, so the Ohio Arts Council takes no responsibility for what happens to your name, e-mail address, etc., once they are posted online. If you would like to receive OAC mailings but do not wish to be publicly viewable in the Directory, contact the Directory Administrator, or click here to learn more about the mailing lists available through the Ohio Arts Council.

13. Can I obtain a hard copy of the Directory?
Unfortunately, no. Although past versions of the Directory were available in hard copy, the Ohio Arts Council no longer prints them due to the high cost involved. But by making it available online we are able to keep it constantly current, which was impossible with a printed version. It is possible for you to print out information for any one artist or any group of artists returned from a search. Just click <Print all artists> on the Search Results page or <Print this artist> in an individual record to see a preview. You can then print directly from your browser or copy and paste the information you need into a word processing program.

14. How was the Directory developed?
The Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory was first developed in 1986 and has a long history. Visit the History link at the top of this page to learn more.

15. Can my organization, performing group, gallery, etc., be listed in the Directory?
Only individual artists are being listed during the first phase of the Directory, although you are free to note any organizations, performing ensembles, etc. to which you belong in your artist profile. We hope to add a section that includes a variety of organizations in the near future. Please check back periodically for updates.

16. I live outside of Ohio. Can I be listed in the Directory?
Yes, but our primary interest is serving the needs of the constituents in the Appalachian region in and near Ohio. Residents of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky are encouraged to become listed, especially if you would be willing to work with organizations, schools, arts centers, festivals, or other artists who are located in or near Ohio’s Appalachian counties. If you have no contact with Ohio organizations or artists and/or have no interest in working with Ohio artists or arts organizations, this Directory may not be a useful resource for you.

17. Is there any cost to be listed in the Directory?
No – it is free of charge!

18. Is there any charge to search the Directory and make use of its features?
No – you may search to your heart’s content!

19. Is it possible to view all the individuals in the Directory at once?
Yes. At the search screen, just click <Search> without selecting any search criteria. The list will be quite long, so it may take a moment to retrieve from our database.

20. Why are some individuals listed more than once?
We have tried to eliminate all duplicate entries, but some may be inadvertently listed. If you have found a duplicate entry and could e-mail the Directory Administrator to alert us, we would appreciate it!

21. If I am listed in the Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory, will I also be listed in any of your other online directories (Directory of Ohio Creative Writers, Ohio Artists on Tour, AIE Artist in Residence, etc.)?
No. The Ohio Arts Council publishes a variety of different directories of artists and each has its own unique purpose and set of criteria for listings. Artists listed in the Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory are free to pursue becoming listed in another Ohio Arts Council directory, but it will not happen automatically. Contact the OAC webmaster for more information about the other directory or directories you are interested in, or click above on <Search Databases> for more information.

22. When I am viewing an artist’s page and then click “Back” on my browser to return to my Search Results, I get a message that says “Warning: Page has Expired”.
This is normal for some browsers and is not cause for alarm. The system is simply telling you that the page you are requesting (the Search Results page) was essentially created in the past (when you first performed your search), and that its content may now be out-of-date. Usually you can just click Refresh in your browser and solve the problem. Contact the Directory Administrator for assistance.

23. What’s the difference between the <Search> button I see in the middle of the page and the <Search this Site> button I see in the upper right hand corner?
The <Search> button refers to the Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory only: use this button when you are searching for artists in the Directory. The <Search this Site> button appears throughout the entire Ohio Arts Council website, and clicking it will take you to a search screen for the entire site. That search will not find any information contained within the Ohio Appalachian Artist Directory itself.
