For many years only those fortunate enough to be in the expert care of cardiologist Dr. Benjamin Schuster, founder of Kettering Medical Center’s cardiac program, knew his name. Over the last decade, however, the Dayton region has come to associate the Schuster name with not only high quality healthcare, but also a thriving arts scene.
Over the years, Dr. Benjamin Schuster and his wife Marian Mayerson Schuster became two of Dayton’s most treasured humanitarians. Through his love of the arts, dedication to the community and generosity of spirit, Dr. Schuster laid a foundation of support and trust by making the lead gift to establish the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2013.
The Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center provides a world-class facility for the best in local, national and international performing artists. The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Dayton Opera call the Schuster Center home, and it also showcases select Victoria Theatre Association presentations and Dayton Ballet productions. A variety of other local arts groups and promoters also use the facilities, which are considered a cornerstone of downtown Dayton’s revitalization.
In August 2012, Dayton – and the art world – lost this pillar and champion when Dr. Schuster died at age 89. He was preceded in death by Mrs. Schuster, who died in 2007 at age 80.
The Schusters shared a 45-year history of philanthropy in the Dayton region, supporting not only the arts but also area educational institutions and medical causes.
When asked why he and Marian chose to make such a significant gift to build the Schuster Center, Dr. Schuster explained, “We wanted to leave a legacy that invites everyone to enjoy the arts. We also wanted a gathering place, a place where people will want to come.”
