First Lady Karen Kasich and the Ohio Legislature Turn Out to Support the 2011 Governor's Awards for the Arts

On Wednesday, May 11, First Lady Karen Kasich will present the welcoming remarks as part of the 2011 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio at the Columbus Athenaeum, located at 32 N. 4th St. in downtown Columbus, from noon to 1:15 p.m. The event is presented by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation.
Representatives and Senators from districts all around Ohio will gather at the Governor's Awards to celebrate the achievements of the arts in Ohio. More than 800 artists, arts supporters, arts patrons, business and community leaders also are expected to come to Columbus to recognize artistic excellence in Ohio and thank the Governor and legislature for their support of the arts.
Awards will be presented by Senate President Tom Niehaus and Speaker of the House Bill Batchelder to the 2011 winners: Arts Administration, Art Falco, PlayhouseSquare (Cleveland); Arts Education, Michael Kenwood Lippert (Dayton); Arts Patron, Mary Wolfe (Perrysburg); Business Support of the Arts, Freund, Freeze & Arnold (Dayton); Community Development & Participation, Lancaster Festival (Lancaster); and Individual Artist, James Friedman, photographer (Columbus). This year, the Irma Lazarus Award will also be given to Wayne P. Lawson (Columbus) for recognition of his lifetime achievement in the arts.
The 2001 Governor's Awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with Arts Day. This daylong event demonstrating public value and support for the arts is sponsored by the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation and will include an arts advocacy briefing, legislative visits and student exhibitions. Arts Day was created to foster a greater awareness of the value of the arts in Ohio. Citizens are encouraged to participate in Arts Day by visiting with their state legislators and communicating the need for public support of the arts and arts education.
