Ohio Arts Council Approves 56 Grants Totaling $232,925

At a public meeting at the Ohio Statehouse on March 8, 2011 the Ohio Arts Council Board approved the third round of grants for fiscal year 2011 and grant ratifications for fiscal years 2010 and 2011. The Ohio Arts Council will award 56 Grants Totaling $232,925 to support arts organizations, arts programs and artists across Ohio. These grants have not been announced previously.
The Council Board has approved a total of 616 grants totaling $5,346,256 for fiscal year 2011 after reviewing 1,162 requests for $19,883,641.
Organizations that receive OAC funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. In general, for every state tax dollar invested, $84 is raised in matching funds by recipient organizations.

Individual Excellence
Thirty-two (32) Individual Excellence (IE) Awards were approved totaling $160,000. Individual Excellence Awards are peer recognition of creative artists for the exceptional merit of a body of work that advances or exemplifies the discipline and the larger artistic community. These awards support artists' growth and development and recognize their work in Ohio and beyond in 13 different disciplines. This fiscal year the agency began reviewing the IE Awards program's 13 disciplines over a two-year period with alternating deadlines for two sets of disciplines. Only applications in crafts, design arts/illustration, interdisciplinary/performance art, media arts, photography and visual arts were accepted at the September 1, 2010 deadline.
2010/2011 Grant Award Ratifications
Ratifications are the Board's final approval of funds allocated in various program areas since its September 29, 2010 meeting. The Board ratified seven grants from 2010 totaling $77,000 and 24 grants from 2010 totaling $72,925. These awards have not been announced previously.
The 2010 ratifications included:
- Six (6) Special Organization grants for $77,000.
The 2011 ratifications included:
- Four (4) Artists with Disabilities Access grants for $1,400.
- Thirteen (13) Capacity Building grants for $27,645.
- Seven (7) Special Organization grants for $43,880.

Grant applications were reviewed last winter and spring by panels of arts experts and Ohio Arts Council staff. The Council Board, consisting of 15 gubernatorial appointees and four nonvoting members from the Ohio legislature, makes final decisions based on panel recommendations.
