The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery will present Deep Space: Ohio Photographers from July 29 – October 17, 2010. Curated by Marcella Hackbardt, the exhibition features contemporary Ohio fine art photographers whose images mobilize and manifest inventive constructions of space. The photographs negotiate distance and proximity as they examine three-dimensional depths depicted with the camera’s perspectival authority, as well as spaces deeply inscribed with intellectual, emotional and aesthetic perceptions. “Photography translates the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation, but is well known for retaining the sensation of real space, volume and vastness,” said Curator Marcella Hackbardt. “Immersing the observer in a place on the other side of the lens, these artists transport us through time, history and the proverbial looking glass.” Join the Riffe Gallery for the opening of Deep Space: Ohio Photographers on Thursday July 29, 2010 from 5– 7 p.m. Curator Marcella Hackbardt will lead a tour of the exhibition on Friday July 30 from noon – 1 p.m. Artists in the show include: Jodi Boatman, Columbus; Debra A. Davis, Toledo; Grant Fletcher, Columbus; Jaime Kennedy, Kent; Allyson Klutenkamper, Portsmouth; Bridget Murphy Milligan, Tiro; Emily Hanako Momohara, Cincinnati; Benjamin Montague, Centerville; Pipo Nguyen-duy, Oberlin; Rachel Girard Reisert, Cincinnati; Barry Underwood, Cleveland; Kelly Urquhart, Kent; Yvette van der Velde, Columbus; Lynn Whitney, Waterville. The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery will also host a free family workshop on September 19, 2010 from 2 – 4 p.m. During the workshop, children 6 – 17 will piece together images and text from old magazines to create a collage that represents something important to them. The clippings can be used to depict a special memory, tell a story of a family pet, or even make a self portrait. Participants can then continue to add layers of meaning by arranging the cut-out images in the shape of their subject and using markers to add text and other illustrations. Registration is required as space is limited and all children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Registration begins July 29 and ends September 10 online at www.riffegallery.org . The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery is located in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts, 77 S. High St., Columbus, OH. Admission is free.
