Larry Kasperek lines up a shot with his pinhole cameraCleveland Photographer Larry Kasperek has been chosen to create the Ohio Arts Council’s 2010 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio. The awards are from his pinhole camera series of photographs. The awards will be presented at a luncheon ceremony honoring winners and members of the Ohio Legislature hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation at noon on April 21, 2010 at the Columbus Athenaeum in downtown Columbus.

Kasperek worked at newspapers as staff photographer and as director of photography in a five state region from 1974 through 2000. His work appears in private and corporate collections including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Glidden Collection and the Marriott Hotel Cleveland. He received his Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri.

“What attracted me was the simplicity of it,” said Kasperek, of his pinhole camera series. “A light-tight box, a tiny hole for a lens, and film. The interesting thing about pinhole cameras is how everything from an inch or so in front of the camera, to infinity are in focus and an extreme wide-angle view.”

Reservations for the 2010 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio and Arts Day Luncheon will be accepted only online at www.oac.state.oh.us. Tickets are $50 and include lunch and a dessert reception. All proceeds go to the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation. Deadline for registration is Friday, April 2. Seating is limited.

Award categories and recipients include: Arts Administration, Kevin Moore and Marsha Hanna, Human Race Theatre, (Dayton); Arts Education, Sylvia Easley (Cleveland Heights); Arts Patron, Jim and Enid Goubeaux (Greenville); Business Support of the Arts, American Electric Power (statewide); Community Development & Participation, Donna Sue Groves (Manchester); and Individual Artist, Andrew Hudgins, poet (Columbus).

Arts Day was created to foster a greater awareness of the value of the arts in Ohio. Citizens are encouraged to participate in Arts Day by visiting with state legislators and communicating the need for public support of the arts and arts education. Each year on Arts Day, Columbus is filled with arts supporters who share the importance of the arts in their communities.
