Logo of 2009 Governor's Awards for Arts in OhioRegistration is now open for the 2009 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio luncheon. The luncheon will be held at noon on April 1, 2009 at the Columbus Athenaeum in downtown Columbus. Nine winners were chosen for the 2009 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Winners were selected from 103 nominations submitted by individuals and organizations throughout Ohio. Awards will be presented at the luncheon ceremony honoring winners and members of the Ohio Legislature hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation. Winners will receive an original work of art by New Carlisle painter Jean Koeller.

Award categories and recipients include: Arts Administration, Marc Folk, Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, (Toledo); Arts Education, Dr. Corwin Georges (Springfield); Arts Patron, Roe Green (Aurora); Business Support of the Arts, Huntington Bank (statewide); Community Development & Participation, Cityfolk (Dayton); Individual Artists (collaboration), Derek Mortland (Columbus) and Michael Joseph Ulery (Sunbury); Irma Lazarus Awards, Willis “Bing” Davis (Dayton) and The Honorable Patrick Sweeney (Cleveland).

Registration information as well as a full list of past winners, is available on the Ohio Arts Council Web site at www.oac.state.oh.us/events/GovAwards. Additionally, advertisements may be purchased for the program group by going to our Governor's Awards advertising page. Advertisements in the program are a great way to congratulate a winner, promote an upcoming season, exhibition or performance, highlight a tourism venue or thank legislators for their support of the arts.

The 2009 Governor’s Awards ceremony and luncheon will be held in conjunction with Arts Day, Wednesday, April 1, 2009. This daylong event demonstrating public value and support for the arts is sponsored by Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation. Arts Day will include an arts advocacy briefing, legislative visits, Statehouse tours and student exhibitions and performances.

Arts Day was created to foster a greater awareness of the value of the arts in Ohio. Citizens are encouraged to participate in Arts Day by visiting with state legislators and communicating the need for public support of the arts and arts education. Each year on Arts Day, Columbus is filled with arts supporters who share the importance of the arts in their communities. The 2009 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio and Arts Day Luncheon are presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Ohio Government Telecommunications. Media sponsors include Ohio Magazine, Ohio Cable Telecommunications Association and Time Warner Cable.

Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation was formed in 1990 as a companion organization of the Ohio Citizens for the Arts, which was established in 1976. OCA is a volunteer, nonprofit grass roots organization working to increase public support of the arts in Ohio. Through the efforts of hundreds of individuals and arts and education organizations, Ohio Citizens for the Arts advocates on behalf of the Ohio Arts Council and the arts throughout the state.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
