Ohio Arts Council Participates in Dresden Artist Exchange
by Jaclyn Reynolds

Artists Susan Vincent of Cleveland and Eliana Calle-Saari of Columbus will be in residence at the Dresden Graphic Workshop in Dresden, Germany from September 8 through October 10, 2008 as part of the Ohio Arts Council’s International Program. Tobias Stengel and Franziska Leonhardi from Germany will be in residence in the fall at Zygote Press in Cleveland. The Dresden residency exchange is supported by the Ohio Arts Council’s International and Individual Artist Grant Programs and Services offices.

About the Ohio artists participating in the exchange:

Susan Vincent, Cleveland
Susan Vincent received her BFA from Kent State University in printmaking. Since 2007 her prints have been included in exhibitions at the Notre Dame Gallery and Heights Arts in Cleveland Heights. In 2009 Vincent’s handmade books will travel with an exhibition curated by Hui Chu, professor at the Myers School of Art, and will be featured in a solo exhibition at Loganberry Books.

Vincent also is very active in the Cleveland community as an arts administrator. She began working full-time at SPACES in 2007 and currently acts as the membership and administrative manager and SPACELab manager. Since 2005 she has been working with Zygote Press and is currently gallery director and associate to the artist-in-residence.

Eliana Calle-Saari, Columbus
Eliana Calle-Saari received her MFA from The Ohio State University and her BA from Otterbein College. She is a lecturer at the Department of Art at The Ohio State University and was a recent artist-in-residence at the Springfield Museum of Art. Her work has been exhibited at The Springfield Museum of Art, the Ann Miller Gallery at Wittenberg University and the Studios on High Gallery in Columbus. She is a member of Phoenix Rising Cooperative, a print cooperative in Columbus, Ohio. She has exhibited in numerous Ohio and regional venues.

During their Dresden residency, both artists will enhance their skills in the print-making field. Working alongside other experienced printmakers they will explore the possibilities that may result while using equipment for etching, photography, letterpress, printing and bookbinding. The Dresden Graphic Workshop was founded in 1958 to preserve original printing techniques and encourage experimentation in printmaking. Artists and typographers work hand-in-hand at the facility to explore the possibilities of printmaking. The two Ohio artists will have their work exhibited in Dresden at the Alte Feuerwache Loschwitz Gallery during their residency.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
