Ohio Arts Council Sponsored International Artist at SPACES
by Jaclyn Reynolds

Ohio Arts Council sponsored international artist Iwona Zajac will be included in the next SPACES World Artists Program. The program is a six-week residency program designed to allow visiting artists the time and opportunity to create new work and interact with the Northeast Ohio community. Zajac’s residency is October 29 through December 8, 2007 and an exhibition featuring her work runs November 16 through January 4, 2008.

About Iwona Zajac:
Iwona Zajac was born in Gdañsk, Poland. She received a MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdañsk. Her work is shown extensively in Poland, including at the WYSPA Institute of Art and the Warsaw Artists Action Association. The exhibition at SPACES is her first in the United States. Since 2002 she has been a resident of the Artists’ Colony on the site of the Gdañsk Shipyard. This year she received a grant from the Polish Ministry of Culture for her project Foreigner. The project is about Polish immigration to London where she lives part-time.

Established in 1988, the Ohio Arts Council’s International Program is designed to foster long-term involvement in international cultural exchange and encourage Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals abroad. In addition to Poland, exchanges have occurred between Ohio artists, performers and administrators and their counterparts in Germany, Argentina, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel and Japan.

SPACES is a nonprofit, artist-run arts organization that provides opportunities for artists to present emerging and provocative ideas in the visual and performing arts. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 8,500 artists an arena in which to present challenging new ideas to an audience of more than 500,000.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
