Ohio Arts Council Participates in Dresden Artist Exchange

Artists Larry Winston Collins of Oxford and Claudio Orso Giacone of Oberlin will be in residence at the Dresden Graphic Workshop in Dresden, Germany from October 22 through November 24, 2007 as part of the Ohio Arts Council’s International Program. Two artists from Germany currently are in residence until November 2, 2007 in Cleveland at Zygote Press. The Dresden residency exchange is supported by the Ohio Arts Council’s International and Individual Creativity Programs.

About the Ohio artists participating in the exchange:

Larry Winston Collins, Oxford
Larry Winston Collins received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and an MFA degree from the Maryland institute, College of Art. He is the recipient of many awards including grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Collins exhibits widely in Ohio and throughout the United States and his work is part of several public collections including the Columbus Museum of Art. Collins also taught at Columbus College of Art and Design for 12 years and is now an instructor at Miami University-Oxford in Oxford, Ohio. Before pursuing a career as a fine artist, Collins worked for 10 years as a graphic artist.

Claudio Orso Giacone, Oberlin
Claudio Orso Giacone received his BFA from Cleveland State University and his MFA from Bowling Green State University. He is the recipient of many awards including an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council and grants from the Nord Family Foundation and the Richard Hallock Foundation. He has worked as an art educator at Bowling Green State University, Lorain County Community College, Oberlin College and in many other schools and communities in Northeast Ohio. His travels and residencies have taken him to Bou-Saada, Algeria; Paris, France and San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico. He exhibits widely in Ohio and internationally.

During their residency in Dresden, both artists will enhance their skills in the printing field. Working alongside other experienced printmakers they will explore the possibilities that may result while using equipment for etching, photography, letterpress, printing and bookbinding. The Dresden Graphic Workshop was founded in 1958 to preserve original printing techniques and encourage experimentation in printmaking. Artists and typographers work hand-in-hand at the facility to explore the possibilities of printmaking. The two Ohio artists will have their work exhibited in Dresden at the Alte Feuerwache Loschwitz Gallery from October 29 through November 18, 2007.

Zygote Press is currently hosting Dresden artists Udo Haufe, master printer at the Dresden Grafikwerstatt and Andreas Hegewald who will be in residence at Zygote Press, Cleveland, Ohio. An exhibition of the work created during the residency will be held at Zygote Press on Friday, October 19 through Saturday, October 27, 2007.

About the Dresden artists participating in the exchange:

Andreas Hegewald
Andreas Hegewald was born in in Sondershausen, Germany in 1953 and studied music during secondary school and painting and graphic art at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden. Andreas has exhibited a wide variety of paintings, graphic prints and sculptures throughout Germany over the past 25 years. He is a founding member of the "riesa efau" Cultural Organization in Dresden and has been a board member of the Dresden Artist Alliance since 2003.

Udo Haufe
Udo Haufe completed an apprenticeship in printing in 1980 and has been a printer at the Grafikwerkstatt Dresden since 1992. He has also worked as a freelance printer and became laureate of 100 Saxon Graphic Artists in 2006. In 2004, he exhibited his work at the Weingutmuseum in Radebeul, Germany and at the Edition+Galerie Erata in Leipzig in 2005.

Established in 1988, the Ohio Arts Council’s International Program is designed to foster long-term involvement in international cultural exchange and encourage Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals abroad. In addition to Germany, exchanges have occurred between Ohio artists, performers and administrators and their counterparts in Argentina, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel and Japan.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
