Ohio Arts Council Approves 143 Grants Totaling $640,745

At a public meeting on March 20, 2007 the Ohio Arts Council Board approved the second round of grants for fiscal year 2007. The Ohio Arts Council will award 143 grants totaling $640,745 to support arts organizations and arts programs across Ohio. The Board reviewed 791 grant requests totaling $1,102,887. Recommendations to the Board were made by advisory panels that reviewed applications throughout the winter.

Together with recommendations approved in June, the Council Board has approved 572 grants totaling $8,455,094 for fiscal year 2007 after reviewing 1,257 requests for $9,610,176.

Individual Creativity - Individual Excellence Awards by discipline

Organizations that receive OAC funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. In general, for every state tax dollar invested, $45 is raised in matching funds by recipient organizations.

Artists with Disabilities Access
Thirteen (13) Artists with Disabilities Access grants were approved totaling $6,500. The Artists with Disabilities Access Program (ADAP) is designed to help artists with disabilities move to a higher level of artistic development.

Arts Access
Thirty-two (32) Arts Access grants were approved totaling $61,045. The Arts Access Program provides funds for first-time applicants to the OAC, startup organizations, community-driven one-time projects and organizations with budgets under $25,000.

Capacity Building
Twenty (20) Capacity Building grants were awarded for a total of $83,400. The program provides funds to strengthen Ohio’s nonprofit arts and cultural sector by helping organizations improve internal governance and leadership, cultivate strategic community linkages and develop financial and human resources for long-term stability.

Individual Creativity—Excellence Awards
Sixty-two (62) applications were approved for Individual Excellence Awards totaling $305,000. Individual Excellence Awards are peer recognition of creative artists for the exceptional merit of a body of work that advances or exemplifies the discipline and the larger artistic community. These awards support artists’ growth and development and recognize their work in Ohio and beyond.

International Partnership Program
Nine (9) International Partnership Program grants were approved totaling $40,570. The International Partnership Program promotes long-term international cultural exchanges and encourages Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals in other countries.

Special Opportunity
Seven (7) Special Opportunity grants were approved for a total of $144,230.

2006 Grant Award Ratifications
Ratifications are the Board’s final approval of funds allocated in various program areas since its June 20, 2006 meeting. The Board ratified 15 grants from 2006 totaling $62,565. These grants have not been announced previously.

The 2006 ratifications included:
Two (2) Artists with Disabilities Access grants totaling $850
Three (3) Capacity Building grants totaling $6,215
One (1) International Partnership grants for $8,000
Nine (9) Special Opportunity grants for a total of $47,500

Grant applications were reviewed last winter by panels of arts experts and Ohio Arts Council staff. The Council Board, consisting of 15 gubernatorial appointees and four nonvoting members from the Ohio legislature, makes final decisions based on panel recommendations.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
