by Kathy Burgan

Printmakers Stephanie Sypsa of Columbus and Michael Loderstedt of Cleveland will be in residence at the Dresden Graphic Workshop in Dresden, Germany from November 1 through December 2, 2006 as part of the Ohio Arts Council’s International Program. Two artists from Germany currently are in residence in Cleveland at Zygote Press. The Dresden residency exchange is supported by the Ohio Arts Council’s International and Individual Creativity Programs.

About the Ohio artists participating in the exchange:

Stephanie E. Sypsa, Columbus
Stephanie Sypsa received her B.F.A. with a minor in art history from Columbus College of Art and Design and she also has been an instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Her work has been included in many exhibitions including the Ohio Art League's Annual Juried Exhibition, Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery, New Orleans Contemporary Art Center and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Gallery.

Michael Loderstedt, Cleveland
Michael Loderstedt received his M.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Kent State University, and his B.F.A. in printmaking and drawing from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Goodrich Headquarters, Cleveland Public Library, Progressive Insurance Company and the International Peace Museum, Kyoto, Japan. Loderstedt also has received two Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship Awards.

During their residency in Dresden, both artists will enhance their skills in the graphic printing field. Working alongside other experienced printmakers they will explore the possibilities that may result while using equipment for etching, photography, letterpress, printing and bookbinding. The Dresden Graphic Workshop was founded in 1958 to preserve original printing techniques and encourage experimentation in printmaking. Artists and typographers work hand-in-hand at the facility to explore the possibilities of printmaking.

Zygote Press is currently hosting German artists Sandor Doro and Stephanie Busch as part of the exchange. They will be in residence at Zygote Press in Cleveland through October 21 and work created during their residency premiered at a Zygote Press exhibition opening on October 13. Zygote Press was founded by a group of artists in November 1995. The facility is available for artists interested in creating fine art prints and multiples. Zygote also provides technical expertise to artists and apprentices who desire further skills in print production and classes, exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations to community centers, schools and institutions throughout the Cleveland area.

About the Dresden artists participating in the exchange:

Sandor Doro
Sandor Doro emigrated to Dresden in 1978 at the age of 28 from his native Hungary. He has had numerous art installations such as The Assassination of Leipzig in 1999 as well as doing architectural design for Polymer Research Lab in Dresden. He has been lecturing since 1982.

Stephanie Busch

She also is involved in the Dresden art scene to create a dialogue among national and international artists, scientists, writers and psychologists for the intention of developing new projects and ideas. Last year she created a glass etching installation at the German Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine.

Established in 1988, the Ohio Arts Council’s International Program is designed to foster long-term involvement in international cultural exchange and encourage Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals abroad. In addition to Germany, exchanges have occurred between Ohio artists, performers and administrators and their counterparts in Argentina, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel and Japan.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
