Ohio Arts Council Announces Third Round of 2006 Grants

The Ohio Arts Council has approved 111 grants totaling $493,241 in its third round of grants for fiscal year 2006. Together with recommendations approved in June and October 2005, the Council Board has awarded 740 grants totaling $7,024,968 for FY2006 after reviewing 1214 requests totaling $18,825,815.

Individual Creativity - Individual Excellence Awards by discipline

Arts Access
Thirty-one (31) Arts Access grants were approved totaling $67,816. The Arts Access program provides funds for first-time applicants to the OAC, startup organizations, community-driven one-time projects and organizations with budgets under $25,000.

Capacity Building
Eleven (11) Capacity Building grants were awarded for a total of $39,850. The program provides funds to strengthen Ohio’s nonprofit arts and cultural sector by helping organizations improve internal governance and leadership, cultivate strategic community linkages and develop financial and human resources for long-term stability.

Individual Creativity–Excellence Awards
Fifty-five (55) applications were approved in the Individual Excellence Program for a total of $300,000. Individual Excellence Awards are peer recognition of creative artists for the exceptional merit of a body of work that advances or exemplifies the discipline and the larger artistic community. These awards support artists’ growth and development and recognize their work in Ohio and beyond.

International Program
Two (2) International Program grants were approved totaling $30,000. The International Program promotes long-term international cultural exchanges and encourages Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals in other countries.

Special Opportunity
Twelve (12) Special Opportunity grants were approved for a total of $55,575.

2005 Grant Award Ratifications
Ratifications are the Board’s final approval of funds allocated in various program areas since its October 2005 meeting. The Board ratified three grants from 2005 totaling $3,000.

The 2005 ratifications include:

  • Three (3) Arts in Education grant totaling $3,000
  • Grant applications were reviewed last winter and spring by panels of art experts and Ohio Arts Council staff. The Council Board, consisting of 15 gubernatorial appointees and four nonvoting members from the Ohio legislature, makes final decisions based on panel recommendations.

    The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
