Columbus Artist Creates 2006 Governor’s Awards for the Arts
by Jami Goldstein

Sue Cavanaugh

Columbus fiber artist Sue Cavanaugh has been chosen to create the Ohio Arts Council’s 2006 Governor’s Awards for the Arts. The awards are from her series of basket and vessel work inspired by markets in Mexico. The Governor’s Awards for the Arts are given annually to Ohio individuals and organizations in recognition of outstanding contributions to the arts statewide, regionally and nationally. This year’s ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2006, 3:30pm in the Capitol Theatre in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts, 77 S. High Street, Downtown Columbus. The awards ceremony is free and open to the public.

Cavanaugh’s work with quilting began in 1999 when she saw an exhibition by quilter Linda Fowler which inspired her to design her first piece. She now dyes her own fabric and is drawn to the markings made through stitch-resisted shibori. She has exhibited work in various museums throughout Ohio, including the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery in The Quilted Surface II: International Contemporary Art Quilt Surface Design Symposium Participants.

2006 Award categories and recipients are: Arts Education: Jack Louiso (Cincinnati); Community development and Participation: Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center (Portsmouth); Arts Administration: Nannette V. Maciejunes (Columbus); Arts Patron: David K. and Georgia E. Welles (Toledo); Individual Artist: Steven Bognar (Yellow Springs); Business Support of the Arts: Park National Bank (Newark); The Irma Lazarus Award: Erich Kunzel (Cincinnati).

The awards ceremony, hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation, honors award recipients and members of the Ohio Legislature for their support of public funding for the arts. Music will be provided by The Cincinnati Youth Orchestra.
