Governor Taft Appoints Ohio Arts Council Members

Governor Bob Taft has announced the reappointments of Susan Sofia and Sheila M. Markley-Black and the appointment of Gail Francis Johnson to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) Board.

“We are very pleased with Governor Taft’s latest appointments to the Ohio Arts Council Board,” said Wayne Lawson, OAC Executive Director. “We’re delighted with Susan Sofia and Sheila Markley-Black’s reappointments and know that Gail Francis Johnson will bring similar talents and energy to the board.”

Susan Sofia, of Columbus, was reappointed for a term ending July 1, 2010. She has been a board member since 1995. She has served as Chair since 2001. Sofia is past chairman of the board of Marburn Academy and an elder of Broad Street Presbyterian Church. She was vice president of Action for Children and has served as a volunteer in many community organizations including the Central Ohio Lung Association, Columbus School for Girls and Boy Scouts of America.

Sheila Markley-Black, from Canton, was reappointed for a term ending July 1, 2010. She has been a board member since 1995 and has served as vice-chair since 2001. Markley-Black is a managing attorney at the law firm of Day, Ketterer, Raley, Wright & Rybolt, Ltd. She is a trustee of the Aultman Hospital, the Canton Cultural Center for the Arts and the YMCA. She was chair of the Walsh College Advisory Board and is on the board of the Canton Museum of Art and the Canton Symphony Orchestra Association.

Gail Francis Johnson, of Dayton, was appointed for a term ending July 1, 2010. Johnson serves as the president of the board of directors of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and is immediate past president of the Dayton Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, a national service organization for professional women of color. Johnson holds a B. S. in accounting from Wright State University and is a C.P.A.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
