Ohio Arts Council Announces Third Round of 2005 Grants

The Ohio Arts Council has approved 142 grants totaling $565,485 in its third round of grants for fiscal year 2005. Together with recommendations approved in July and September 2004, the Council Board has awarded 669 grants totaling $8,315,133 for FY2005 after reviewing 1,385 requests totaling $15,468,735.

Appalachian Arts Program
Fourteen Appalachian Arts Program grants were approved totaling $25,477. The program provides a variety of services to support, preserve and encourage the growth of arts organizations, activities and artists in rural and urban Appalachian communities.

Arts in Education Program
Five Arts in Education special projects grants were approved for a total of $5,000. The AIE Program funds residencies for professional artists in schools and community centers and initiatives that support high quality arts projects.

Building Diverse Audiences Program
The Building Diverse Audiences Program awarded one matching grant for $16,321. The BDA program provides seed money to arts organizations to involve audiences of African Americans, Appalachians, Asians, Latinos/Hispanics, Native Americans and people with disabilities.

Community Development Initiative
There was one Community Development Initiative grant awarded for $5,000. The Community Development Initiative is designed to work with Ohio communities over an extended period to demonstrate the measurable impact of the arts and culture on the public.

Individual Artist Fellowships
There were 68 Individual Artist Fellowships awarded totaling $335,000. The Individual Artist Program offers fellowships of $5,000 or $10,000 to artists of exceptional talent based on the quality of their work. Artists working in choreography, contemporary and traditional crafts, criticism, design arts, fiction and nonfiction writing, interdisciplinary and performance art, media arts, music composition, photography, playwriting, poetry and visual arts are eligible.

Individual Artist Professional Development Assistance Grants
Three Professional Development Assistance awards totaling $52,520 were approved. The program helps artists attend workshops, conferences, seminars, symposia and other events to enhance their ability to make art. It also provides grants to organizations to feature and promote Individual Artist Fellowship recipients in exhibitions.

Information and Resource Assistance Program
Seventeen Information and Resource Assistance Program (IRAP) grants were approved for a total of $21,745. IRAP grants are available to organizations to support consultancies and attendance at workshops.

International Program
Eight International Program grants were approved for a total of $36,500. The International Program promotes long-term international cultural exchanges and encourages Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals in other countries.

Traditional Arts Apprenticeships Program
There were seven Traditional Arts Apprenticeships approved totaling $34,524. Traditional Arts Apprenticeship awards support collaborations between master artists and dedicated apprentices to preserve Ohio’s traditional and folk arts.

There were three Special Programs and Services grants totaling $13,500 and 15 Special Opportunity grant awards for a total of $19,898.

Panels of experts review grant applications throughout the year and send recommendations to the Council Board, consisting of 15 gubernatorial appointees and four non-voting members from the Ohio legislature. The board makes final grant decisions. Board and panel meetings are open to the public. Organizations receiving Ohio Arts Council funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. In general, for every state tax dollar invested, recipient organizations raise $10 in matching funds.

The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically.
