At a public meeting on June 30, 2004 the Ohio Arts Council Board approved the first round of grants for fiscal year 2005. The Ohio Arts Council will award 474 grants totaling $7,660,270 to support arts organizations and arts programs across Ohio. The Board reviewed 517 grant requests totaling $9,844,869. Recommendations to the Board were made by advisory panels that reviewed applications throughout the spring. On July 1, the original Ohio Arts Council fiscal year 2005 budget of $12,101,845 was reduced by 6% to $11,375,734. The OAC made a number of administrative and program reductions in order to accommodate the reduction. The grant amounts included with this release have been calculated based on the reduced budget amount. Organizations that receive OAC funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. In general, for every state tax dollar invested, $10 is raised in matching funds by recipient organizations. Organizational Support Grant Awards The Council Board awarded 306 organizational support matching grants totaling $2,254,360 for Art in Public Places, Community Arts, Dance, Design Arts, Literature, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Traditional Arts and Visual Arts and Crafts. These grants provide partial funding for projects sponsored by organizations or operating support to fund the artistic and administrative functions of organizations with annual operating incomes under $1.5 million. Operating Support I Grant Awards A total of $4,499,456 was awarded to 43 of Ohio’s major arts organizations through the Operating Support I Program. The OSI Program provides operating support for cultural institutions that serve a broad segment of Ohioans and have yearly budgets of $1.5 million or more. Appalachian Arts Program Fourteen Appalachian Arts Program grants were approved totaling $23,356. The program provides a variety of services to support, preserve and encourage the growth of arts organizations, activities and artists in rural and urban Appalachian communities. Arts in Education Grant Awards Fifty-three Arts in Education grants were approved for a total of $209,760. The AIE Program funds residencies for professional artists in schools and community centers, and initiatives that support high quality arts projects. Artists Projects Grant Awards The Artists Projects Program awarded 9 grants totaling $45,466. The program provides funds to individual artists or groups of artists for specific projects or a phase of a project. ,b>Building Diverse Audiences Grant Awards The Building Diverse Audiences Program awarded one matching grant for $16,321. The BDA program provides seed money to arts organizations to involve audiences of African Americans, Appalachians, Asians, Latinos/Hispanics, Native Americans and people with disabilities. Performing Arts on Tour The Performing Arts on Tour Program awarded 37 matching grants for a total of $326,961. The PAOT program funds professional, nonprofit dance, music and theatre presenting organizations to help them bring performing arts to their communities. YouthReach Ohio Eleven YouthReach grants were awarded for a total of $284,590. The YouthReach Ohio Program fosters collaborations between arts organizations and other community organizations, especially social service agencies. The program targets young people who are at risk of not making a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. 2004 Grant Award Ratifications Ratifications are the Board’s final approval of funds allocated in various program areas since its September 2003 meeting. The Council Board, consisting of 15 gubernatorial appointees and four nonvoting members from the Ohio legislature, makes final decisions based on panel recommendations.
