2011 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio

Stivers School for the Arts Jazz Orchestra

Stivers School Jazz Orchestra

At Dayton's Stivers School for the Arts, Jazz Orchestra is a year-long course of study open to any woodwind, brass, percussion or piano student selected by the music faculty. Advanced jazz repertoire is chosen from professional libraries of current and historical composers and arrangers. Performance opportunities and master classes are offered with guest artists several times during the year.

As of May 2011, the Stivers School for the Arts Jazz Orchestra has won first place or grand prize awards at every jazz festival it has entered, culminating in winning the prestigious Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival in 2004 and 2008. The group has performed as part of the Muse Machine's production of "The Music of Disney" and in April 2009 appeared in the Cityfolk premiere "Celebrating Billy Strayhorn" with the Terrell Staford Quintet.
