About the Awards Artist

Francis Schanberger, photographer, Dayton

Francis Schanberger received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of California in San Diego. He then moved to Ohio to complete his MFA in photography and digital imaging at The Ohio State University in 1993. He was a recipient of a 2003 Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship and was awarded an Individual Excellence Award by the Ohio Arts Council in 2009.

Even though photography is now his focus, Schanberger has not forgotten his scientific roots. A wonderful combination of art and chemistry was used to produce the "Forces of Nature" collection, from which the 2011 Governor's Awards artwork was selected.
