Ann Hamilton, Columbus

Ann Hamilton is a professor of art at The Ohio State
University. Born in Lima and residing in Columbus since 1991,
Hamilton received her B.F.A. in Textile Design from the University
of Kansas in 1979 and her M.F.A. in Sculpture from the Yale
School of Art in 1985. Her first solo exhibition debuted in
1988 with a large scale, multi-sensory installation titled
the capacity of absorption at the Museum of Contemporary Art
in Los Angeles. In 1990, the Wexner Center for the Arts commissioned
her to create a work for an exhibition entitled New Works
for New Spaces for the center's inaugural event. As a distinguished
artist, Hamilton has exhibited at numerous arts institutions
including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn
Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Walker
Art Center in Minneapolis, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary
Art and museums and art centers across Canada and Europe.
She also represented the United States at the 21st International
Sao Paulo Biennale in 1991 and the Venice Biennale in 1999.
Hamilton's collaborative interaction with students, fellow
artists, family members and friends is a key value in her
work. She maintains the values of a humble teacher who knows
how to listen and focus on the larger project at hand. Among
Hamilton's many awards and honors are the Guggenheim Memorial
Fellowship and the highly prestigious MacArthur Fellowship.
Internationally known, Ann Hamilton is an artist who values
her community and shares her passion for the arts with others.
