Curator Charles Kleibacker with garments from the exhibition More than 40 garments by 20th century clothing designers are on display at the Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery through July 9. Reality and Interpretation: 20th Century Clothing and Illustration was curated by Charles Kleibacker, who has been an advertising copywriter, clothing designer, teacher and curator. The exhibition includes more than 100 illustrations by influential fashion artists. Student designs that foreshadow the fashion industry's future also are in the show. Reality and Interpretation explores the relationships between the garments and artists' sketches and paintings of them. The exhibition asks viewers to contemplate the illustrators' unique approaches to color, fabric and silhouette in fashioning two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional designs. Reality and Interpretation includes garments and illustrations from the 1920s into the 1990s, which allows viewers to contemplate the impact that economic, political and social culture have had on the fashion industry. The way garments are designed and the materials used in their construction are affected by events of the time they were made. (CON'T PAGE 2) |

MAYOR WILL DISCUSS HEALTHY CITIES
A viable, healthy metropolitan area with a high quality of life that includes a 24-hour downtown, safe, convenient neighborhoods for people of all incomes, conservation of valuable open space and an efficient transportation system will not happen by accident. It will be the result of sustained cooperative action throughout the metropolitan area. William Hudnut, four-term mayor of Indianapolis, U.S. representative and author, will discuss his vision of how to build a cooperative, compassionate and competitive city at a Columbus Metropolitan Club luncheon, May 18, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Columbus Athletic Club, 136 East Broad Street. Hudnut will be the final speaker in the multi-year urban issues series Growing Inward: Rebuilding the Center City. His talk is part of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office's biennial conference, Building Successful Communities: Preservation and Revitalization Strategies. As mayor, Hudnut established a national reputation for revitalizing Indianapolis and came to be regarded as an entrepreneurial leader willing to take prudent risks. (CON'T PAGE 3) |
