2012 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio
Kokorodza Marimba Ensemble
Kokorodza is a word in the Shona language meaning “to gather, or collect.” The Kokorodza Marimba Ensemble is a collection of students from two schools within the Kings Local School District of Kings Mills, Ohio. The current ensemble is comprised of 5th and 6th grade students from Columbia Intermediate School, and 7th grade students from Kings Junior High School. Shona music and compositions and arrangements inspired by Zimbabwean marimba music comprise the majority of the ensemble’s repertoire. The ensemble has presented concerts at the Cincinnati Museum Center’s African Culture Fest and the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference, and was invited to perform at Zimfest, the largest festival of Zimbabwean music and culture in North America. Students are selected for membership via audition and attend a two hour after-school rehearsal once each week.
