Media Relations : What is News?

What is News?

NEWS IS:

  • Timely
  • New
  • Informative
  • Educational
  • Significant
  • Unique
  • Interesting
  • Entertaining

Editors typically have a limited amount of airtime or print space to present an almost unlimited supply of information. They must select stories based on specific criteria:

  • Will this story be of interest to a large number of readers?
  • Does this story talk about a large number of people in the community?
  • Does this story speak of a special noteworthy event or something that would have special significance to the community?
  • Is this story out of the ordinary?
