Home | The Riffe Gallery Artful Teaching: Work by College and University Painting FacultyNovember 3, 2011 to January 8, 2012 The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery will present Artful Teaching: Work by College and University Painting Faculty from November 3, 2011 – January 8, 2012. Curated by Dominique H. Vasseur, curator of European Art at the Columbus Museum of Art, the exhibition offers viewers a unique glimpse into the legacy of Ohio arts by highlighting the work of 12 painters who teach in Ohio institutions of higher education. As educators, these artists provide the link between the present and the future of arts in Ohio. "As this exhibition's goal is to present the work of painters teaching in Ohio's many institutions of higher education, it is maybe appropriate to begin these remarks with a paraphrase of a well-known adage: 'Behind every great artist is a great teacher,' " says Curator Dominique H. Vasseur. "Artistic talent is a gift, but raw talent is little without training and guidance. The best painters are those who have learned through their professors as well as the art of the past." Join the Riffe Gallery for the opening of Artful Teaching on November 3 from 5 – 7 p.m. Curator Dominique H. Vasseur will lead a tour of the exhibition on November 4 from noon – 1 p.m. Artists in the show include (educational institution and hometown noted): Louise Captein (Otterbein University, Galena), Valerie Escobedo (University of Findlay, Findlay), Craig Lloyd (College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati), Marina Mangubi (College of Wooster, Wooster), Penny Park (Wright State University, Dayton), Darice Polo (Kent State University, Cleveland Heights), Jolene Powell (Marietta College, Marietta), Robert Robbins (Columbus College of Art & Design, Westerville), Dana Saulnier (Miami University, Oxford), John Yan Sun (Muskingum University, Zanesville), Edward E. Valentine (The Ohio State University-Lima, Delaware) and Paige Williams (Art Academy of Cincinnati, Cincinnati). In conjunction with the show, the Riffe Gallery will hold a free Family Workshop on Sunday, December 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. Using elements from work in the exhibition as a starting point, participants will create paintings that incorporate contrasting styles, colors, techniques and subjects. Discover in this workshop—led by Artful Teaching artist Louise Captein—how you can bring together dissimilar parts to create unusual, yet great-looking, expressive pieces. Registration is required as space is limited. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Registration begins November 3 and ends December 6 at www.riffegallery.org.
