PORTSMOUTH MURALS (CON'T)

community members, volunteers, donors, artists, community and state leaders, for the official dedication and celebration of the floodwall murals.

The belief that the murals would stimulate the economy has proven to be true and the positive impact on the community of Portsmouth has been incredible. Historic properties along Front Street are being renovated and businesses are moving into the once dilapidated area. The murals have become a tourist attraction that has drawn visitors from all over the world. PMI is working with the Ohio Department of Transportation&Mac185;s Ohio Scenic Byways Program to purchase a building adjacent to the murals to serve as a welcome center. The destination of many educational field trips, the murals also are teaching area school children about Portsmouth history. The Portsmouth floodwall murals have become a source of pride for people of all walks of life in the city of Portsmouth and are a true example of the power of utilizing the arts to revitalize a community.
