Dr. Richard Benedum, professor of music and alumni chair in the humanities at the University of Dayton, has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to direct an interdisciplinary institute for teachers. Paradise, a play commissioned by the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, is this year's winner of the Lazarus New Play Prize for Young Audiences. The play, by nationally-recognized playwright Glyn O'Malley, examines the impact of war on children and is based on a true story. Paradise is the story of two girls, one a Palestinian and one an Israeli, trapped in unending cycles of violence. It is a powerful look not simply at the Middle East conflict but also the far-reaching effect war has upon the lives of children. The play will tour to area schools and enjoy a public performance at the Playhouse in the Spring. It complements the theatre's outreach mission and its commitment to nurturing new plays and new audiences. For more information call 513/345-2242.

The Cleveland Artists Foundation has created an educational video resource for the Cleveland community and region. Creative Essence 1900-2000 records previously undocumented facts and opinions on the art of the region and current issues facing regional artists and arts institutions. The video draws from 22 hours of public discussion over the course of two years with members of the Cleveland community. Hundreds shared their views and stimulated lively discussion with cultural leaders and artists. The Cleveland Artists Foundation (CAF) was established in 1984 as a non-profit arts and education organization for the purpose of preserving, researching, collecting and exhibiting the most significant art of the Northeast Ohio region. For more information call 216-227-9507 or visit www.clevelandartists.org.

Studies show that arts education makes a tremendous impact on the developmental growth of every child and has proven to help level the "learning field" across socio-economic boundaries.
