ARTS EDUCATOR AWARDS (CON'T)
Evaluations revealed that teachers felt that the program enhanced students' cognitive and language skills and strengthened social and emotional development.

"This award is significant in that it underscores the importance of art in our society, and in particular, our economy. By supporting academics through art, we will develop children who will be well-rounded adults and valuable contributors to our society," said Marsha Dobrzynski, executive director.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, YAGC is one of 32 chapters of National Young Audiences, the oldest and largest arts in education organization in the country. Working with a roster of 75 professional artists/ensembles in music, theater, dance, literary and visual arts, YAGC provides schools with arts experiences that are integrated into the core curriculum. Last year, 325,000 young people in northeast Ohio benefited from over 9,000 programs presented by Young Audiences. READING ROAD TRIP (CON'T)

The Ohio Reading Road Trip aims to replace "skill and drill" techniques with curriculum that helps students connect with the materials and develop a long lasting appreciation for reading and language arts. An instructor's guide provides lessons that are aligned with state language arts standards.

The program also will fund 20-25 writer-in-residence grants on a competitive basis to schools in districts designated by the State of Ohio as low wealth. These residencies will be administered by the Ohio Arts Council.

The OAC Arts in Education staff will guide applicants through the application process and participate in on-site planning sessions for each residency. Schools that receive grants will be invited to the Arts in Education Program Fall Conference, a professional development opportunity available to participants in the Artist in Residence Program.

Partnerships with corporations, foundations and other state agencies are helping to broaden and strengthen the OAC's reach in Ohio's communities.
