Register Now for the OAC's Summer Media Institute

The Ohio Arts Council and Ohio University will host the 15th
annual Summer Media Institute, a nationally recognized program for Ohio's teachers and school administrators, July 21-27, in Athens. Participants in the Summer Media Institute work with artists, filmmakers, photographers, computer animators, graphic and digital artists, writers and poets to develop a wide array of media skills.

This year's workshop leaders are Ohio University professor Sam Girton, digital imaging; OAC Individual Artist Fellowship recipient Tony Mendoza, photography; OAC Individual Artist Fellowship recipient Ed Radtke and Kentucky filmmaker Herb E. Smith, video storytelling; and University of Rhode Island professor, Sherri Wills, computer animation. Participants will use the lab facilities in the university's schools of telecommunications, visual communication and art.

Terry Barrett, professor of art education at The Ohio State University, will present workshops on critical thinking skills and art criticism. Terry Hermsen of Columbus and Regie Gibson of Boston will conduct creative writing workshops.

Pre-K-12th grade teachers and administrators from all
academic areas and the arts are encouraged to apply. SMI offers four hours of graduate credit. Application deadline is May 15. Enrollment is limited. For more information call 614/466-2613, e-mail margot.vetter@oac.state.oh.us or visit www.oac.state.oh.us.

Connections (CON'T)

The Riffe Gallery will host several special events in conjunction with the exhibition. May 18, from 1-5 p.m., Connections artist Mary Jo Bole will lead a pre-computer journey to rediscover the art of the cut-and-paste, homemade magazine. Participants should bring their own photos and images to build personal pages in this collaborative publication and may take home a copy of the finished work. $25 supply fee. Space is limited. Call 614/995-4139 for reservations.

On Family Day, June 2, 2-5 p.m., Connections artist Kathleen Browne will demonstrate how simple patterns can be a springboard for incredible art. Participants will make their own stencils, create take-home pieces and contribute to a group wallpaper project. The event is free and open to children of all ages and their adult companions. On June 8 and 9, 11:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., the Riffe Gallery tent at the Columbus Arts Festival will offer more
creative activities.

Connections will travel to SPACES in Cleveland September 13-October 25 and to the Weston Art Gallery, Aronoff Center for the Arts, in Cincinnati November 22-January 18, 2003. A full-color catalog of the exhibition is available for $10. For more information call 614/644-9624.
