2002 GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR THE ARTS WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Eleven winners have been selected for the 2002 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Winners were selected in seven categories from more than 140 nominations. Awards will be presented at a luncheon honoring award winners and members of the Ohio Legislature hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation March 13, 11:30-1 p.m. at The Columbus Athenaeum, 32 North Fourth Street in downtown Columbus.

Award categories and recipients are: Individual Artist: Brinsley and Lilian Tyrrell (Ravenna), and Herbert Woodward Martin (Dayton); Arts Administration: Roger M. Berkowitz, Toledo Museum of Art; Arts Patron: Otto M. Budig Jr. (Cincinnati), and Loann Crane (Columbus); Arts in Education: Martin W. Nagy, Arts Council Lake Erie West (Toledo); Arts Outreach: Black Heritage Library & Cultural Center (Findlay); Business Support of the Arts: Dennis Kurlas, owner Red Squirrel and Skyline Chili (Hamilton), and Southern Ohio Medical Center (Portsmouth); Partnership in the Arts: University of Rio Grande ­ Graduate Education.
   
The Irma Lazarus Award will be given to Christoph von Dohnányi of The Cleveland Orchestra. The award honors the memory of Irma Lazarus, an arts patron, advocate and leader in the development of state funding for the arts in Ohio. It goes to organizations or individuals who have helped shape public
support for the arts. Special recognition will be given to the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education for nearly 30 years of promoting arts education in Ohio.
   
Winners will receive an original work by artist Kim Vito of Dayton. Vito is an Associate Professor of Art in the printmaking and drawing department of Wright State University.
