AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS HELPS LIMA ORGANIZATION ANIMATE DEMOCRACY
The Council for the Arts of Greater Lima recently was awarded funds from Americans for the Arts to participate in the Animating Democracy Lab. The Lab is a component of the Animating Democracy Initiative, a four-year initiative of the Americans for the Arts Institute for Community Development and the Arts. Supported by the Ford Foundation, the initiative fosters artistic and cultural activity that encourages civic dialogue on important contemporary issues.

Citizens of Lima will participate in workshops and interviews with Michael Rohd and Sojourn Theatre to examine the issues of racism and distrust of leadership. Based on the workshops and interviews, Sojourn will develop a theatre piece that will be presented to community leaders and citizens. Community members involved in race relations will receive further training on how to use art to stimulate dialogue and local artists will be encouraged to develop more locally relevant work through an ongoing Council for the Arts of Greater Lima grant program.

The Council for the Arts of Greater Lima was one of 16 organizations in the country selected to participate. For information call 202/371-2830 or visit www.artsusa.org.
