Soon, arts enthusiasts of all ages and professional artists in and around Cleveland will have a new venue to explore their artistic talents, expand their artistic skills and show their work. Art House, Inc. recently received funds to hire a director, cover startup costs and move forward with plans to establish a physical presence in the city.

Cleveland councilwoman Merle Gordon provided a $175,000 grant towards the purchase and renovation of an 1885 Victorian house and a 1948 Quonset hut at 3119 Denison Avenue. Once the structures are rehabilitated they will provide space for classes, programs and exhibitions. Additional funds for Art House were provided by the George Gund Foundation, The Cleveland Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council. (CONT'D PAGE 3)

DEWINE APPLAUDS PUBLIC HOUSING YOUTH ARTS PROGRAM

U.S. Senator Mike DeWine has applauded the new Creative Communities cooperative between the National Endowment for the Arts, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, which will bring education to young people living in public housing.

"Children deserve an artistic and productive outlet," said Senator DeWine. "Creative Communities is designed to serve as an after school safe haven in public housing communities. Children will have the opportunity to foster creative skills and talents while improving the quality of life in these communities." Senator DeWine serves on the National Council on the Arts.

Creative Communities is a $4 million, three-year initiative that will provide free, weekly art instruction to youth living in public housing. Cleveland Public Theatre will receive a Creative Community grant and Ohio will receive 16 awards totaling $1,083,300. For more information call 202/682-5570.
