HAWKINS (CON'T FROM PAGE 1)
Hawkins' paintings, with their brilliant colors, rich brushwork and large-scale formats, turn mass media images into vivid portraits of American life. Born into an eastern Kentucky family of hunters and trappers, Hawkins had no formal artistic training. He began drawing as a little boy and painted sporadically while working as a house painter, construction driver and scrap merchant. Hawkins worked in Columbus until his death in 1991. The drawings and paintings in this exhibition give viewers an intimate look into his energized world.

The Riffe Gallery, operated by the Ohio Arts Council, showcases the work of Ohio's artists and curators and the collections of the state's museums and galleries. The gallery is in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts, State and High Streets, Columbus. Hours are Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 12-8 p.m. and Sunday 12-4 p.m. Admission is free. Winners will receive original prints by photographer Jon Warner of Tipp City. Warner attended Wright State University and the Ohio Institute of Photography in Dayton. He is an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship recipient.

Awards will be presented at a luncheon honoring recipients and members of the Ohio Legislature, hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation, March 22, noon to 1:30 p.m. at The Columbus Athenaeum, 32 North Fourth Street in downtown Columbus. Honda of America Mfg., Inc. is sponsoring the Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio this year. Invitations will be mailed in mid-February. For more information call Lucy Spurgeon at 614/466-2613.

Arts administrators and educators interested in exploring current issues and trends in arts education, fundraising and marketing and promotions should attend.
