Nine winners have been selected for the 2000 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Winners were selected in seven categories from 162 nominations for their outstanding contributions to the arts in Ohio. Award categories and recipients are: Arts Administration, Sister Sheila Shea, Sylvania; Arts in Education, E. Richard Shoup and Jerry Tollifson, Columbus; Arts Outreach, Akron Symphony Orchestra; Arts Patrons, Paul J. Bartel, Cincinnati, and Dr. Stanley and Mickey Kaplan, Cincinnati; Business Support of the Arts, Dana Corporation, Toledo; Individual Artist, Charles Csuri, Columbus; Partnerships in the Arts, Kaiser Permanente, Brooklyn. The Irma Lazarus Award will be given posthumously to Robert Bergman, former director of The Cleveland Museum of Art. Members of the 2000 Governor's Awards Selection Committee were Barbara Baker, Lancaster, chairperson; David Barker, Columbus; Martha Burton, Portsmouth; Sheila M. EXHIBITION DRAWS VIEWERS INTO WILLIAM HAWKIN'S WORLD The inventive, emotionally charged art of William Hawkins will be on view January 27-April 2 at the Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery. Curated by Tim Keny, director of Keny Galleries in Columbus, William Hawkins: Drawings in Context includes 67 drawings, 22 paintings and some popular media images that inspired the artist. Hawkins' highly personal paintings and drawings reveal his sense of humor and zest for life. The Riffe Gallery will present a free
public lecture about Hawkins' work on February 27 at 2 p.m. and activities
for children 6-9 on March 12 at 2 p.m. Hawkins created a powerful body of
drawings from the 1970s until 1990, shortly before his death. Using
materials ranging from graphite to colored pencil to collage, Hawkins
imaginatively captured scenes from everyday life. The exhibition includes
animal sketches and architectural and narrative scenes that demonstrate
the artist's keen observation of the human and natural worlds. |
