I write music. This has been going on since I was six -- though my earliest pieces for piano have long since disappeared. Now I compose for a spectrum of instruments and voices, mostly in a classical vein. In schools I work with the music teacher (or the band, orchestra or choir director) to discover how new music can be. In communities, I work with an art center, a chorus or an instrumental group to discover the possibilities of new music. As a flutist and recorder player I can demonstrate how these instruments are used in the 21st Century.
I've been writing for voices lately. Maria Zart, exploring the possibilities of a chorus in large resonant space; Star in the East for a church choir with organ and flute; Wisdom was there and Sueño despierto showcasing flute and three women's voices. I also write chamber music and music for larger ensembles. Haworth Suite, recorded by the Prague Radio Philharmonic, is due for release this summer.
My composition degrees were earned at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the University of Hawaii, though I've studied lots of other places. I sing with the May Festival Chorus. As a flutist and recorder player, I was Artist-In-Residence for the Arkansas Arts Council and the State Arts Council of Oklahoma and started with the Ohio Arts Council as a composer in 1985. My Liquescence for flute and strings won the 2004 EPIC music competition and was recorded by the Symphony Orchestra of the Adriatic. I belong to the American Composers Guild, the American Federation of Musicians and ASCAP, from whom I regularly receive the ASCAPLUS award. Click on my web site to hear my music.
