Project Summary:  Kent State University (KSU) invites Ohio and national artists to submit up to nine (9) digital images of past work for the Design Innovation Hub Percent for Art project commission. From the submissions a group of semi-finalists will be selected to visit the campus, meet with the committee (comprised of KSU faculty and staff), and visit the artwork site location to create a site-specific art work proposal. KSU employees and their spouses, and students enrolled in any degree-granting program are not eligible to apply for this commission.

Project Background and
Building History:
The project will complete a major renovation of the old Art Building originally designed by Australian architect John Andrews in 1971. Called the ''Design Innovation Hub''(DI HUB), the $44.9M project will completely transform the entire building into a vibrant center of activity for design thinking and include a 350-seat dining facility to bring additional vibrancy to the building.

The DI HUB will operate as an open-access collaborative maker and innovation accelerator environment at the center of the Kent Campus, to activate a community of inquisitive people, teach and facilitate cross-disciplinary design, communication and problem-solving capacities.

In the DI HUB, the strategy will be to host a combination of core/typically-needed tools as well as specialized pieces of equipment that are not already present in other academic areas across the university. The goal will be to leverage and elevate the entire Design Innovation Ecosystem across all campuses at Kent State to best expose our students and community members to the resources and possibilities.

Mission of School or Site:  The DI Hub brings together students, faculty, community and leading experts from diverse disciplines who are thoughtfully addressing technology and society through design to become creative, intersectional problem-solvers and fearless collaborators in the face of complex, messy problems.
The Design Innovation Team VALUES:
1. Design Innovation as a collaborative mindset and ethos
2. Student-centered learning and engagement through challenge-based innovation
3. Developing empathy, respect and diversity
4. Addressing human-centered/user-centered challenges
5. Existing as a ''shared by all/owned by none'' initiative and ecosystem
6. Exploring and activating the intersections between fields
7. Breaking barriers and biases through cross-disciplinary communication (perspective taking)
8. Fostering and curating cross-disciplinary teams to tackle challenges through their collective application of knowledge and skills
9. Creating an environment in which students are intrinsically motivated and externally validated (by creating valuable solutions for others)
10. Process: for articulating, reframing, deciding, activating and generating novel insights and solutions
11. Building the propensity for individuals to seek temporary unity with others to create awareness, confidence, capacity and empowerment
12. Making/Fixing/Exploring/Iterating/Thinking/Doing/Failing/Repeating

Artistic Goals of the
Commissioned Piece:
The artwork will be located outside of the building on a site adjacent to the University's Lester A. Lefton Esplanade. The location will have strong pedestrian interaction and will establish a visual and physical connection to the building and Design Innovation as a concept (www.kent.edu/designinnovation). The site is located within a larger outdoor public art collection, clustered along the Esplanade, and sometimes referred to as the ''sculpture mile'' It is anticipated that the commissioned work reflect the values and work that occurs within the DI HUB by embodying themes of curiosity, creativity, collaboration, technology and community.

Practical Considerations:  Artwork considered for the installation next to the DI HUB and the university Esplanade must be durable and suitably maintenance free. Exposure to weathering, potential for damage and public safety must influence the selection of materials and methods of installation. The use of utilities or mechanical apparatus as part of, or in support of, the sculpture is discouraged. However, accent lighting for night viewing is recommended. Submitted documentation of previously created work by interested artists should demonstrate past experience creating durable, permanent, outdoor sculpture.

Selection Review Process:  Interested artists should complete the online form by visiting https://apps.oac.ohio.gov/Programsx/IndividualArtist/IndividualArtistLogon.asp
After completing the online portion of the application (which includes title, dimensions, medium, and price of each of the nine works) submit images of past work (exterior only) in .jpg format via email to kathy.signorino@oac.ohio.gov. The subject line should read: Ohio Percent for Art KSU DIHub Commission Announcement. Images may be sent any dimensions but should be less than 2mb. Images should be labeled: LnameFname_01_(application#).jpg for example: SmithJohn_01_0123.jpg. NOTE: The application number is provided to you when you complete the online application process.
Artists should also submit:
1. A current resume (maximum four pages)
2. A one-page statement about their work
The Advisory Selection Committee will review submitted materials and develop a list of semi-finalists that will be invited to meet with the committee for a site visit. Members of the university community may engage with the artists during this visit. After the site visit semi-finalists will be invited to create a proposal for artwork for the Design Innovation Hub. Submissions must be new and unique to KSU, previously submitted proposals will not be accepted. Each semi-finalist is offered a proposal fee and site-visit honorarium. Proposals may be presented in person, via Skype/Zoom, or by video with teleconference. The university community may provide commentary to the committee. Submitted proposals become the property of Kent State University.
