2014 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio
Business Support of the Arts
Macy's, Inc.
Nominated By: Steven Sunderman, May Festival Executive Director, Cincinnati Musical
Festival Association
Award Accepted By: Jim Sluzewski, SVP of Corporate Communications and External Affairs,
Macy’s, Inc.
With a history reaching back more than 150 years, Macy’s, Inc. (formerly Federated Department Stores Company) has a legacy of giving back to the communities where it does business and where its employees live. Much of the company’s give-back philosophy can be traced to its Ohio roots and the original department store companies through the state that today are Macy’s.
Support for the arts is a key part of Macy’s community support and is based on the belief that
the arts contribute energy and creativity to a community, inspiring widely diverse audiences
and touching individuals in meaningful ways.
In the Cincinnati metropolitan region, which is home to their corporate office and Credit and Customer Service operations, Macy’s has a long tradition of support for arts and cultural organizations, including ArtsWave, Children’s Theatre, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Cincinnati Men’s Chorus, Cincinnati Musical Festival Association, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Contemporary Arts Center, Ensemble Theatre, Learning Through Art, and Northern
Kentucky Symphony Orchestra.
In central Ohio, support goes to the Dayton Art Institute, CATCO in Columbus and the Lima
Symphony Orchestra Association, and in Cleveland, Macy’s supports the Cleveland Orchestra.
In total, Macy’s, Inc. funding for the arts in Ohio totals nearly $1 million annually.
