Ohio Artists on Tour
Klezmer -- Eastern European Jewish folk music -- is a delicious concoction that sounds like jazz with 11 secret herbs and spices added. Founded in 1988, Yiddishe Cup has performed throughout North America. The band's goal is to keep alive music from the Yiddish culture, which was almost wiped out by the Holocaust, communism and assimilation. The group's vocalists sing in Yiddish, Hebrew and English. Its instrumention is clarinet, sax, flute, violin, trombone, trumpet, keyboards, mandolin, drums, harmonica and guitar. The music is spirited and draws excellent responses from very diverse audiences. The band works with a dance leader, a person who gets the crowd up and moving.
''In years of presenting hundreds of concerts, I would be hard-pressed to think of a band who kept their audience moving like this one.'' -- Karen Kopchak, Cultural Arts Program Manager, U.S. Dept. of the Interior, National Park Service, Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
