C O N C L U S I O N

On October 26, 1963, President John F. Kennedy, speaking at a time when the challenges our urban areas face today could hardly have been imagined, set a goal that remains valid:

"I look forward to an America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty, which will protect the beauty of our natural environment, which will preserve the great old American houses, and squares, and parks of our national past, and which will build handsome and balanced cities for our future."

James Kunstler made a compelling case for the work to be done when he stated: "Cities are the indispensable dwelling places of civilization. Urban sprawl is bankrupting us socially, economically and ecologically, and is culturally self-destructive." The time to act is rapidly passing us by.
