THE ARTS HELP BUILD A WELL-EDUCATED WORKFORCEIn 1940, roughly one quarter of the U.S. population over age 25 had a high school diploma. Today, that same portion now holds a bachelorıs degree. As this countryıs economy has evolved over the last half-century, education levels have risen dramatically as businesses have sought to fill technical, scientific and managerial positions that have supplanted lower-skilled jobs. In 1999 the Ohio Arts Council established cultural agreements with Buenos Aires, Argentina and Chile. The Ohio Arts Councilıs artistic exchanges with Argentina and Chile include visual and performing arts, arts administration, arts education and cultural industries. As part of the Ohio Arts Council's International Program these exchanges encourage Ohio artists and arts organizations to form partnerships with arts professionals abroad. The agreement with Buenos Aires was renewed in March when Governor Bob Taft, as part of the Ohio Business Mission to South America, signed a framework agreement with Dr. Anibal Ibarra, the Chief of Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and Jorge Telerman, Secretary of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, to continue promoting cultural and artistic exchanges between Ohio and Buenos Aires. "I am pleased to have signed the cultural agreement with the city of Buenos Aires, solidifying the significant exchanges this city and Ohio already share," Taft said. One of the exhibitions heading to Argentinaıs Centro Cultural Recolota is Aspirations: Toward a Future in the Middle East, featuring works by 11 Israeli and Palestinian photographers.
