The Mad River Theater Works YouthWorks program is Ohiošs only rural professional theater company using the arts to serve at-risk youth in rural Ohio. Program participants are at risk of not making a successful transition from adolescence to young adulthood due to severe behavior handicaps, mental illness, substance abuse, emotional disorders, depression, anxiety or suicidal tendencies. Artists from Mad River work with youth from the Ben-El Child Development Center, an outpatient mental health agency for young people, and Adriel School, a residential treatment facility for troubled youth. Many YouthWorks participants have experienced feelings of failure at home, school or in their communities. YouthWorks provides an opportunity for youth to succeed in reaching a goal, a chance to be applauded for their achievements, and a voice in creating a work of performance art. YouthWorks builds self-value and a better understanding of family and community through the sharing of stories and the creation of plays. Artists from Mad River and program participants research local history and make timelines of social and technological change. Participants interview community members and conduct research on play topics by taking (CONT'D PAGE 3) |
